Bomb Jack

One of the best features of Bomb Jack is its scoring system. As soon as you grab your first bomb on any given stage, another bomb will start fizzing. A fizzing bomb is called a Fire Bomb and collecting one will then cause another to start fizzing, and so on. Collecting a fire bomb gives you double the points of a normal bomb and if you collect more than twenty of them in one round you’ll receive a large bonus at the end of it, increasing to fifty thousand points if you manage to collect all 23 of them.

My Top 5 Candy Bars

Proclaimed in a series of adverts to “have a hazlenut in every bite”, the Topic’s sold these days must surely adhere to this slogan, for over the years, I swear Topic’s have been getting smaller and smaller (except in price, of course). Now barely three RKS-size bites in size, they remain ultra-lush, but their profile has fallen far since the days of national TV adverts and I fear they will disappear altogether in the not-too-distant future, so eat them while you can!

Star Wars Battlefront II

SWBFII is such an improvement over its predecessor it totally surprised me and reminded me how fond of Star Wars games (TIE Fighter is what I am actually referring to) I once used to be. There are lots of excellent maps, vastly improved game mechanics, four different factions, many weapons and classes to choose from, playable characters (Darth Vader and co.) that can be used in multiplayer battles, a decent single player campaign, driveable vehicles and even a small but interesting strategic mode called Galactic Conquest (unfortunately only for the single player mode). By far though, the most interesting new feature is the inclusion of space battles. X-Wings, B-Wings, Y-Wings, TIE Fighters and the rest are all there in a highly enjoyable space flight sim in the style of X-Wing versus TIE Fighter.

The 8-bit Book 1981 to 199X

As is the case with the rest of the books of the series, each page of The 8-bit Book covers one game and presents it complete with all the relevant info you might care for, a description of the game and an eclectic selection of pictures covering everything from screenshots, to game boxes, to cartridges and loading screens. As for the accompanying text itself, it’s very well written and higly informative, not only describing the game itself, but also (among other things) providing behind the scenes information, mentionig reviews of the era, sequels and even remakes.

Licky Licky Music Video

In our music video series, we hope to showcase videos that can slowly melt your brain away either in a good way or a bad way, as long as there is some brain melting going on. This video is called Licky Licky by the group Crispy. Strangely enough, I really thought it should be called Exotic Fruit, but what do I know.

Space Hulk 2nd Edition

Silliness aside, the Warhammer 40000 universe, Space Hulk’s setting, is a very rich in detail and well-portrayed world. An unholy bastard of a fantasy and sci-fi setting it may be, but also one of the better gaming worlds around. Space Hulk 2nd edition (Space Hulk henceforth) is accordingly one of the better board games around. Perhaps the best I’’ve ever played, and one I can’’t recommend enough.

Captain Quazar

The game is viewed from one of my favourite perspectives – 3D isometric. There are ten large levels which are divided over the three planets, and each has a different objective. On level one, for instance, you must destroy a set number of rockets containing an addictive spice, though you’ll only get a short time to do this as they start to launch as soon as they appear on the screen.

F-Zero

One of the most amazingly classic racing games for the SNES is surely F-Zero. It was a very unique game for its time and deserves a spot at the Retro Game of the Week. The game is huge with lots of crazy tracks and your rivals as well. You have different difficulties to pick from as well as different tournaments to pick. The game is pretty simple except it’s set in the future and the race tracks have uniqueness all over.
