For me, classic means something from 1980’s. From that era, Faery Tale was the most mind altering experience (along with Elite, of course). I still remember first reading a review that told about the huge game world and freedom to go anywhere. The experience was nothing short of profound. It was like all the confines of games had been removed. To top everything were excellent graphics, music and audio that the new Amiga 500 could produce on screen.

I remember getting HoMM II, b/c I had to return some stupid mini-golf game that wouldn’t run on my 75MHz Pentium, thank goodness for that, the franchise turned out to be a life long gaming love affair that still has me entranced with its simplicity, depth, and wonderful style both visually and aurally. I played it when it was released in 1997 and I hadn’t even started to learn English at that time, so my mother helped me understand what the characters said. I remember memorising several lines of dialogue and repeating them to my mother so I could get a translation. It’s the game that got me into playing strategy games. With only 1 ship, you transported tanks and other units to the different bases scattered around the level in order to take over sections of the map. The ship had limited fuel, so expanding was very important since you could also refuel at the captured points. The ship could transform into a robot so you could attack the ground also.

Pitfall Harry entertained me for a week straight in the early 80’s while I was stuck at home trying to deal with the Chicken Pox. Even at a very young age I loved the thrill of completing a task under a tight deadline, and collecting all those treasures while timing the hazards just perfectly was the ultimate in entertainment. It kept me hooked well after I recovered from the pox.

As a former traditional 2D animator I think that Earthworm Jim has some of the best character animation I’ve ever seen in a video game. The visual design is unique and the game play is responsive giving the player a tactile experience. Unlike most game franchises where the sequels usually get better as time goes on, this IP never really made any thriving sequels. The first game is still the most popular and still gets ported to new platforms. EWJ is a solid side-scroller even by today’s standards.

Ultima 4 is truly an exceptional example of a near-perfect RPG. It is huge and open, with a “go anywhere, do anything” feeling, and it manages to avoid many of the clichés of the genre. It is certainly one of the top five CRPGs ever made.
