Even at a very young age I loved the thrill of completing a task under a tight deadline, and collecting all those treasures while timing the hazards just perfectly was the ultimate in entertainment. It kept me hooked well after I recovered from the pox.

Pitfall is one of the best games for the Atari 2600. Basically I can say the same for all the original Activision titles.
