You don’t get the show #5: Cops need to play Police Trainer

J.A. and Randy figure out how to solve all the problems with the various police departments across the nation, get them playing games like Police Trainer and the FMV version of COPS and only let the best of the best get back on the street.

We also talk about sleep away camp and going away for 6 to 8 weeks at a time with no video games or phones and does that mean your parents regret having you.

Capcom bows to SJW’s again by censoring Cammy’s nipples in Street Fighter V and for the life of us we can’t figure out why.

We learned after the failure of the Super Mario Bros movie, Nintendo purchased the rights to an adult movie parody called Super Hornio Brothers and while on the subject Randy introduced J.A. to the Pokémon adult parody Strokemon and the horribly disturbing Pikachu makeup they made for one of the atresses of the film.

With the release of the Justice League Trailer we had to dive into that and geek out on how awesome it was and wonder if finally, DC will give Marvel a run in the comic book movie business and finally, we talked about the loyalty reward fiasco going on with Star Trek Online and asked the question what would be a good way to reward a loyal fan base.

This is another awesome fan trailer. The story behind this trailer is that Batman was killed and Dick Grayson begins retraining to avenge the death of Batman.

We called it: DC Universe Online goes free to play

dc universe free to play

DC Universe Online goes free to play

If you are a regular fan of Obsolete Gamer you know about our cold war with Sony and DC Universe Online. It started out with us liking the game, but pleading with them to fix bugs and make changes so the game survives. Next, when we tried to get an interview we were turned down which just pissed us off and from there it was war. At the very beginning we called that the game would soon be headed toward free-to-play and we were right.

Sony will be going the free-to-play route in October for both the PC and Playstation 3 versions. You will be able to download and play the game for free, but there are also addition options for al a carte purchases and subscription plans. You can see the choices here.

“Our philosophy embraces learning from our experience and as a pioneer in the free-to-play space with proven successful games like Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures, we believe this new model will expand the DCUO experience and offer more options that cater to every type of player so they can play the game in a way that fits them,” John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment, said in a statement. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.”

Do we really need to translate this? People were leaving DCUO like Raccoon City and the Mega servers were nothing more than “we have no players on our servers” and now we have to go free to play. However, Sony does know how to market their free-to-play services with games like Everquest 2 and the above mentioned Clone Wars Adventures offering just about everything for sale in their marketplace. Now the question is will this business model work for DCUO, will you now play the game since it is free and has mega servers?

The adventures of Batman and Robin

Snes-adventures-of-batman-and-robin

I was looking forward to this game, after playing a lot of mediocre to poor ones this week. I had heard good things about it, and was a big fan of the 90′s cartoon, for which it was based. Konami put this out in 1994, around the time they changed the name of the cartoon from Batman: the Animated Series. The cartoon was very good to exceptional, and if they didn’t screw up that feel, we would have a winner.

Snes-adventures-of-batman-and-robin 2
Good news! I start play and find they incorporated the fantastic animation, as well as music from the series. It’s more than a typical scrolling action/platformer that gives you plenty of things to do to mix it up a bit. The first level pits you against The Joker, as you’re invited into his Funhouse for a rescue mission. You’re given a number of Bat-toys incuding the Batarang/rope/stars/goggles, etc…Luckily, they give you a reason to use your gadgets, and they’re not just for show. You fight, jump, and Batrope your way through his puzzles until you reach the first boss, a huge toy soldier! After that, Joker puts you on a runaway roller-coaster and tosses bombs at you. If you make it through that, you’ll face the Clown Prince, himself.

Snes-adventures-of-batman-and-robin 3
There’s probably a dozen levels throughout facing all of your favorite Arkham-escapees; Catwoman, Penguin, Two-Face, Riddler, and more. They each have their unique levels that makes it seem like a bunch of mini-games. Again, it looks beautiful, plays well, and the music makes you feel like you’re playing inside an episode of the series.

The adventures of Batman and Robin - SNES - gameplay screenshot 1
Two negatives on the game; Robin is barely around, and doesn’t really do anything, so if you thought this would be a kick-ass co-op, you’d be wrong. Secondly, and most importantly, THERE’S NO VOICE!! Everything is in text! I could just imagine how good this game would have been had I been experiencing the great Mark Hamill taunting me as The Joker instead of having to read, “HAHAHAHA! Follow me into my funhouse, Batman!”

Just saying, if you’re going to do it…do it right.

Obviously, I’m pleased with the game, and if you have your old SNES sitting around, pick this up. It’s Bat-astic!

New Ultimate Spiderman identity

Miles Morales - Spiderman

After the death of Spiderman by the hands of the Green Goblin, fans have been wondering who would take the reins of Spiderman and today we learn his name is Miles Morales. Miles is a half-black, half-Hispanic teen that has never appeared in any Spiderman comics before.

There have been a number of changes to characters in Marvel Comics to add more minorities to the cast of heroes. One of the most notable recent changes is Nick Fury who was changed from a white man to a black man after the portrayal of him by Samuel L. Jackson.

There has been a split reaction, not mainly because of his race, but of Marvel’s reasoning’s to do this. Many believe it is an attempt to steal some thunder from DC re-launch. Others believe it is political or pandering. Some blame the media for making more of this than it is while a few consider the ultimate universe non-cannon so it does not matter.

I try to think and write as a human of earth than a specific race. While I think it is good to add more minorities to stories, I think we need not make it such a spectacle. I remember before the awful Batman and Robin movie they considered casting a black Robin. When I said, no, keep him like he was, people looked at me weird as if I should be fighting for a black everything.

While I believe change is good, I do believe some things should stay as they are. Since this is an ultimate series, it is fine to try a new Spider man, but in historic series keep the original and instead try to push new characters that are of different background instead. Afterall, we cannot keep pushing Superman, Batman, Spider man stories forever. We will need new blood, no matter what color the skin above it is.

Green Lantern Emerald Knights Trailer

Green Lantern Emerald Knights Trailer

Coming June 7th there will be a new animate DVD for all us DC fans to collect. Green Lantern Emerald Knights combines a number of Green Lantern stories from the comic books; in fact it was pretty well summed up by a commenter on the YouTube page:

This will weave 6 stories of the Green Lantern Corps’ mythology around preparations for an attack by an ancient enemy told by Hal Jordan as he mentors a new recruit named Arisia 0:32 before the occasion of helping Hal, Sinestro, & The Corps save the universe from the destructive forces of Krona. Hal tells tales of Avra(the 1st GL of the Green Lantern Corps) & several of Hal’s comrades- including Abin Sur 1:23, Kilowog 0:33, Laira 0:55 & Mogo(A Green living, sentient planet GL) 1:21

Did Smallville’s series finale deliver?

Lex-Luthor-Smallville

In my opinion Smallville’s series finale did not deliver. Don’t get me wrong, I am not going to go off on a tangent about how I wasted years of my life watching the program (however, there were those Lana episodes). Like the series finale of Lost, I felt it did not deliver, but overall I still liked watching the show.

What was wrong in my opinion, well first off the wedding story was just flat. We first were led to believe a wedding was going to be part of the final episodes then Clark calls it off, then he reconsiders, then she calls it off then reconsiders and then they decide to go ahead with it only to have it interrupted and then postponed seven years and we still see no wedding in the end.

Forget cannon for a moment, that just was a waste to me. We have seen the on again, off again wedding story way to many times just as we have seen the wedding interrupted by a bad guy to many times to count. I just got the feeling that, like the Lost finale, they were killing time.

Second, we were once again treaded to possession of human’s stead of seeing a real villain. Yes, I understand on a television budget they would have a hard time making Darkseid look good, but to have him take over Lionel’s body was just bad. I could understand maybe if it was just a season finale, but the series finale, no, unacceptable. I almost rather have my Doomsday fight back than what we saw.

Speaking of which, another fight in Clarks barn and the way he was able to beat Lionel-seid was to fly into him? I just don’t understand why you can’t tailor the fights better to the budget, we have seen good T.V. fights before, but even his flying attack did not look good. Hell, the fight between Clark and Dark Oliver was better.

Yet another travesty was Green Arrow one-shotting all of Darkseid’s lieutenants. I understand Green Arrow is a badass and that he had the special arrows, but my God, you could not have cut out some of the Lois and Clark banter to give us a bit more of Green Arrow versus the terrible three?

Then we have Lex, again we suffer from the mind wipe problem that has plagued Smallville for quite some time. I knew they would have to find a way to make Lex forget everything, but the mind wiping gel smear job could have been done better. In fact even the Lex, Clark meet in the castle could have gone better and that was most likely the best part of the episode, well, besides Mercy kicking ass and killing alter-Lionel.

Last but not least was the reveal. I just felt as if everyone on the show was so exacted that they were playing the Superman theme that they forgot to actually make the visuals good. We see more of the suit with Clark’s father is holding it then when Superman is wearing it. We could have done without all the super close up headshots of Clark and see some of the suit without it being panned out and blurry. Then the big “treat” to the fans is Clark running on the roof of the Daily Planet and ripping his shirt open to see the “S” shield, no, not good enough.

If I had to rate the show I would give it a D+ and that is only because Lex was back and Mercy kicked ass, but besides that I am afraid Smallville will soon be forgotten. Overall, the series was decent and if people learn from their mistakes they can build on it for a future superhero show or pass on them all like Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman TV Show Dropped

wonder-woman-tv-show-action-shot-5

Perhaps NBC was just scared of more failure of hero related television after the slow painful death of Heroes and the stink of The Cape, either way the David E. Kelley Wonder Woman project will not see the light of day on network television.

There seems to be different reasons as to why the show will not make it on air, from the hate they received over the costume changes to low scores during test screening, but considering this news has made as many people happy as upset, perhaps they made the right move. Many believe it is better to save Wonder Woman for the big screen and do it right rather than taint her name with a bad television show.

Of course, NBC has a record of dumping good shows and rushing to cookie cutter concepts and reality shows so when there were rumors that WW was in trouble most expected it to get dumped. Strangely enough, some people are calling actress Adrianne Palicki, who would have played Wonder Woman, as being a curse to shows since she was on other shows that never made it or died soon after it launched such as Lost in Space, Lone Star and Mercy Reef.

Finally, some felt David E. Kelley himself should not have been working on the show. Many felt he is best used for court room and lawyer shows and with the changes to Wonder Woman’s origin and storyline, including making her a CEO, it was less a Wonder Woman story are more a hybrid of other storylines.

So what will we get instead of a Wonder Woman show? Word is NBC has picked up The Playboy Club, Awake, Grimm, Whitney, Up All Night, Smash and Prime Suspect, let’s remember these names and see how many are still around by 2012.

Retro Love: Buy a Dreamcast

Sega Dreamcast Logo

It’s been quite some time since I’ve got my brand new, but also (and that’s quite an oxymoron) second hand, SEGA Dreamcast, and let me tell you, I am as happy a punter as one can be. I’m a 100% converted and a newborn SEGA fanboy (well, not a boy in the full sense, but you get the idea… at least I’m not in my thirties just yet). I’m also rather thankful to the Dreamcast Junkyard for fuelling my DC obsession.

All things considered I’m thankful to dear Mr. Elderly too, for providing this blog’s comments space with a healthy dose of Irish surrealism, but that’s definitely none of your business. All you should focus on is buying a Dreamcast (unless of course you already got one, in which case you should consider buying a second). Why? Well, because…

1) It’s a matter of price.

The Dreamcast is dead cheap. You should be able to buy a brand new one for less than 80$ (that’s 60 euros) over at Lik-Sang (try clicking on the banner at the end of the article to see for yourself), or follow my example and buy a second hand one, either at e-bay or at your local second-hand-store-bazaar-whatever for quite a bit less than 50$. And this is paying for a 100% current-gen console.
Sega Dreamcast Console
the Dreamcast (via)

2) It’s the bleeding hardware

It doesn’t only look smart, it is smart. SEGA’s Dreamcast is miles ahead from both the Nintendo 64 and the PlayStation, even though it’s not as powerful as the PS2 or the GameCube. It sports a RISC 128bit CPU capable of 360 MIPS (N64 ~120 MIPS, PS1 ~30 MIPS), a special edition PowerVR2 graphics processor, that can cope with 10 times PS1’s polygons, 16MB of RAM, a 1 Giga “GD-ROM” (aka fancy, fast and easily pirated CD-ROM) drive, brilliant 64 channel audio and a modem. Yes. The first console modem ever. Oh, and European players will apparently enjoy full 60Hz PAL support.

Sega Dreamcast Motherboard

the insides of the beast (via)

3) It’s the brilliant (and admittedly very cheap) games

With more than 300 games, the Dreamcast has something for everyone, except perhaps for us poor football minded maniacs. Most used (and abused) games should be picked up at ridiculous prices of 5-10$ (less in euros, even less in pounds), while published titles include such brilliant gems as Soul Calibur, Rez, Sonic Adventure 2, Rayman 2, Phantasy Star Online, Quake 3 (you might even be able to track down Half-Life), Metropolis Street Racer, Shenmue, Ikaruga, Crazy Taxi 2, Jet Grind Radio and the quite legendary Samba de Amigo.

Soul Calibur - Sega Dreamcast Screenshot

Soul Calibur

I could actually go on and mention at least a dozen more distinctive and defining games, but I’d rather mention something else. Dreamcast games are still being produced! Have a look at the 2006 released Under Defeat or the forthcoming Last Hope shooter.

Under Defeat - Sega Dreamcast Screenshot

Under Defeat

4) It’s the innovation and the quirkyness

And I’m talking innovation, beside the Internet connection or the PAL ting. The Dreamcast controller featured a brilliant analog stick, the now-standard shaped triggers and interestingly the Virtual Memory Unit, or VMU. This VMU thingy was far more than a memory stick. It plugged into the controller and used its little LCD screen to display relevant game information or graphics and even was a wee version of Gameboy, as it also functioned as a completely separate portable handheld gaming device (from hell). VMU games can be found right here, but searching and googling around will lead you to quite a few more cyber-stashes.

Sega Dreamcast VMU

the VMU (exposed)

As for quirkyness, one could mention the DC Keyboard, the Fishing Rod, the quite new-at-the-time Vibration Pack and above all Dreamcast’s Wii capabilities.

5) It’s the scene

By saying the scene I’m talking of the vibrant DC emulation, demo, homebrew and even amateur journalism community. On the Dreamcast you see, one can play anything from old arcade, to MegaDrive, Amiga, Atari, Gameboy, Playstation or NES games. There’s even a ScummVM port that makes those old Lucasarts adventures of yore DC compatible. Then again one can listen to MP3s, watch DivX videos, see the Dreamcast get pushed to its limits and play zillions of Tetris versions. All of these courtesy of the scene.

To start tasting sweet freeware offerings (you will need DiscJuggler to burn things on CD) try the following links: DCEvolution.net, Dreamcast Homebrew, IGN Dreamcast, Dreamcast @ pout.net.

6) There is no 6

Go on. Buy one! It’s cheap and powerful, but also quite the retro machine. Oh, and the Wii isn’t out yet.

Cosplay: X-Pimp

I have been playing a lot of the classic superhero games from Spiderman and X-men or the original DC fighting game so in honor of that this week’s Cosplay is dedicated to Superheroes.

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle on Smallville

Booster-Gold-and-Blue-Beetle-Smallville-Screenshot-1

The final season of Smallvillie is bringing in more DC fan favorites and the next upcoming episode will feature none other than the Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. With Lois, perfecting Clarks bumbling fool routine Booster Gold arrives in Metropolis from the future and begins saving people and posing for pictures quickly becoming a fan favorite. Meanwhile, an alien suit of armor crash lands on earth and becomes infused with a young teen who tries and fails to control it and it is up to Clark and Booster to save him.

I personally like what they did with the Booster Gold costume. I understand people hate the “biker jacket” costume style, but I guess they really rather go that route than something like spandex or tight leather. Blue Beetles costume on the other hand has a mix of cool and cheese looking. In the clip below it looks pretty good, but in some of the pictures, not so much so.

I guess we can all decide once the show premiers, for now check out these shots from the CW.

Justice League Movie by 2013?

justice-league

We have heard the talk about a Justice League movie for a while now and through Warner Bros, have always said that a movie would be forthcoming we as fans all wondered if and when such a movie would take place. Recently, in an interview with the Los Angeles Time, Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. motion pictures said that a JL film was a “first priority” for the studio.

What does this mean, well the current information according to the interview is that a script is already being worked on for a JL film and they expect a movie to hit theaters sometime in 2013. We already know there are scripts for a Wonder Woman and Flash movie. We also know that with Christopher Nolan stepping away from the Dark Knight series after The Dark Knight Rises that there may be a reboot for the franchise. Finally, we know a new Superman movie is in the works, so like Marvel, DC is bringing out all their solo projects before the massive undertaking of a Justice League movie.

How will it turn out, we will have to wait and see.

The Flaming C Returns

The Flaming C.

Conan created an awesome superhero based on himself called, The Flaming C. It is made by Warner Brothers Animation Studios, the same people who made the Batman Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Young Justice.

DC Nation: Cartoon Network

DC-Nation

If you have not had the chance to check out the new Young Justice cartoon on Cartoon Network you should and it looks as if DC will soon be bringing much more to the network of cartoons with their new DC Nation programing block.

For those that do not know DC Nation is the name DC Comics uses for the convention panels and their promotional column on the back pages of their comic, the question is, what will DC nation look like on television?

Here is what DC themselves had to say:

DC Nation: A multi-platform, branded block of original programming and exclusive content based on the DC Comics library of legendary character properties, DC Nation is developed in partnership with Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. The all-new venture will harness the publishing, theatrical and television assets together for one powerful on-air block on Cartoon Network with exclusive online content.

What does that exactly mean, well, we don’t know. Here is what Newsarama said:

Best guess is that it’ll mostly been previously released animation panel combined with newly produced content promoting DC movies and comics. A weekly dose of Dan DiDio? Is the television world ready? We’ll see.

Perhaps along with original programing they will bring back the DC universe cartoons that resided on their sister network Boomerang such as Batman: The Animated series, Superman and Justice League. Either way it should be a good time for DC Comic fans and with the new Green Lantern animated series coming in late 2011 it looks as if DC is making a home on the CN.

DC Nation block is set to come to Cartoon Network in 2012.

POD: Marvel versus Capcom 3

Marvel vs Capcom 3 logo
Marvel vs Capcom 3 logo

I won’t even try to pretend I am not fanboi’ing out over MvC3. When I first heard about it I was excited and it took me back to the days when I played X-Men versus Street Fighter. I would spend hours at the gas station playing and honestly kicking everyone’s ass who dared to challenge me. Then I moved on to the arcades where I had a pretty strong record, but as always some 8 year old kid would come and lay the smack down on me, I swear his dad made the game.

When Obsolete Gamer was at E3 2010 I got to see and demo the game and yes, it is flashy and has an anime fighting style with over the top special attacks. I can understand how some fighter fans would be turned off and with so many fighting games out Marvel versus Capcom 3 might not be your cup of tea.

However, for me I always loved mash up fighting which is why I even play MUGEN games on my PC. I just love the idea of different worlds coming together. My dream is a game where its DC versus Marvel done Capcom style not Mortal Kombat style (sorry).

For today’s picture of the day we bring you screenshots of a very well-known hero and an undeniably evil bad guy. In addition we have two videos showing off gameplay of these two. First up is everyone favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Next is the man you love to hate and bain of the Resident Evil series, Wesker.
