Motivational Monday: Not so Superman

Lex Luthor has created a virtual Metropolis and trapped Superman’s friends in there and for some demented reason wants Superman to spend most of his time flying through rings with an unreasonable time limit. Perhaps this would be reasonable if the flight controls were good and it wasn’t over done, but on both counts they failed.

Bubble Bobble Double

So why would you want to flick or pop them? Good question. The enemies come out in different patterns, sometimes they are bunched together and sometimes they are apart. When you burst a bubble it also damages enemies around it whether they are inside a bubble or not. However, when you flick them you can hit other enemies that are farther way or to hit incoming enemies.

Games to Buy: Console Edition: Nov 21 2010

A new name and a new way of doing our weekly report on games coming out the following week. With so many games out there the fact is some will be worth the cash and some will not be. Beyond that some games may be worth picking over the others and so we have come up with a dollar sign rating system. One $ means it can wait until it’s in the bargain bin and five $’s means you should be waiting in line to purchase it.

Jonathan Collins: MiniMonos

The best burger joint in town had three arcade units when I was a kid: Frogger, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong (showing my age here). Frogger was seriously addictive, despite (or perhaps because of) it’s simplicity. The music is enough to drive you mad, but hearing it brings back memories of great times hanging out with friends.

Zone 40 Wireless Gaming

Depending on who you ask the games on the Zone 40 are either really horrible or terribly crappy. Some even say the graphics on the original 2600 look better. The 11 sport interactive games play sloppy and don’t have the look or reaction time of the Wii and the arcade games are not even as good as flash games you can find on an ad on a porn website.

Mungo Amyatt-Leir: Flight 1

I quickly become hooked, walking 4 miles each way to school so that I could spend my bus (and lunch) money on this beast. My nightmares were punctuated by the appearance of that tiny saucer and hundreds of vector-rendered tiny rocks, perfectly rotating as they hurtled across the screen with only the limited hyperspace jump acting as my saviour.

DD was my first experience with fighting co-op… um… for everyone back then I guess as it opened up a new genre of gameplay. My friends and I were hooked from the first day we wasted at the local sandwich shop. We probably paid for the machine 5 times over with all the quarters pumped into it. Best move was the grapple/knee to the head then toss, but watch out because you could punch your buddy too.

POD: Marvel versus Capcom 3

I won’t even try to pretend I am not fanboi’ing out over MvC3. When I first heard about it I was excited and it took me back to the days when I played X-Men versus Street Fighter. I would spend hours at the gas station playing and honestly kicking everyone’s ass who dared to challenge me. Then I moved on to the arcades where I had a pretty strong record, but as always some 8 year old kid would come and lay the smack down on me, I swear his dad made the game.

Eitan Glinert: Fire Hose Games

Madness was one of the best games ever created, and is STILL fun today more than two decades later. I used to play on the Amiga 2000 with my older sister; she preferred the mouse, while I preferred the obviously superior joystick. Lemmings was a fantastic time sink; some of the later levels were some of the best designed puzzles I’ve ever seen.

Dhalsim, after winning a fight: “Now you’ve realized the inner mysteries of Yoga!” – I spent enough money on this game in the arcade to put a down payment on a small house. Nothing was more satisfying than having a bunch of people line up to put their quarters down to try and kick you off the cabinet, and playing for an hour or more on 1 quarter.

I love the pure simplicity of Galaga. It takes you right back to roots of gaming with its ruthless nature. Your goal: Make it on the highscore table by any means necessary and all you need to worry about is moving left and right and pressing the fire button. I’m far from being considered a ‘master’ of it, but it never fails at reeling me in for a good round or two every now and then. I actually have the arcade machine sitting a few feet away.

Fury of the Furries review

The further you go the more time you’ll spend planning on how to complete each level since often you’ll find yourself with only one or two of these fur-balls available and sometimes not even through the whole stage but only at certain areas. And in the World of Fury of the Furries there’s many things that can kill you – starting from sharp spikes and pools of acid to mutated bees and other oddly shaped figures of game designer’s sick imagination.
