The Healthy Gamer

This week on the Obsolete Gamer show we had the chance to speak with Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput on his research study on video game playing and the increase in food intake. We discussed the effects of video games on the body and how it can result in weight gain due to overeating and how even motion games like the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect may not be the answer. There has been many articles on gamers health including the effects it can have on your life. However many focus only on the negative effects and not so much on how to game and still remain healthy and safe. On the panel we discussed various ways to be a healthy gamer as well as the negative effects of playing video games for to long.

Standing the test of Time

For our panel the gang went over some questions featured on our Facebook page and then discussed games that stand the test of time. In other words, classic games that even over 30 years old are still fun and worth playing today. Finally, we discussed classic games that had a lasting impact on us. Games that defined the culture of the time and/or our gaming habits.

Final Fight-Double Impact Remixed Soundtrack

For those who never played Final Fight Double Impact it was released for download a few years ago for XBL and PSN. Final Fight Double Impact featured HD-filtered graphics and remixed music, composed by Simon Viklund. You can download the soundtrack free. My favorite track is Level 4-2, it’s my ringtone.

Castlevania for the Atari 2600

Ever hear of the game Roc N Rope for the Atari 2600? It was not that popular or well received when it was first released in 1984 based on the Konami arcade game. However, thanks to this game we now can play Castlevania on our Atari 2600 emulator.

One Pound Fish

While this video is now everywhere I have to admit I like the backstory behind it. The guy has never sung before and just made up a little jingle to get people to visit his fish stand. His friend ended up recording him doing his song and put it on Youtube and now not only is he an internet sensation, but has a deal pending with Warner Bros. Also, watching the video with the girls I pretend the one pound fish he is talking about is them.

Did you know: That Girl is Poison

Poison’s gender came into question when Final Fight was being ported to North America and then for the Super Nintendo Entertainment system. A concern for hitting women was brought up to which Akira Yasuda responded that Poison was not actually a female, but a transvestite. We are not really sure if Yasuda felt hitting transvestites was ok, but regardless having Poison as a post op transvestite did not sit any better with the censors and so for the SNES release of Final Fight, Poison and Roxy were changed to male punks, Billy and Sid.

iCade 8-Bitty Retro Wireless Game Controller Review

The first thing I noticed when I received my 8-bitty is the NES inspired design. The pad feels a lot like the old NES control complete with the button layout except the 8-bitty also features two top buttons. The fake wood paneling on the side is a nice touch and the buttons on the 8-bitty feel sturdy so don’t worry about going button mashing crazy.

Christmas Nights into Dreams

Perhaps the best definition of a Christmas game, Christmas Nights into Dreams was released as a promotional sampler disc during Christmas 1996 for the Sega Saturn. While labeled as a sampler disc containing only new versions of the same stage the disc itself not only came with a cool Christmas theme but a ton of bonus content that never came with the original version of the game. Honestly, it played more like a standalone game than a demo.

Animated Nintendo Controller Evolution

Here is a very nicely animated history of some of Nintendo’s controller designs. I remember switching from the classic Atari controller and thinking the NES felt so boxy. Personally, it was the SNES controller that did it for me and to this day it is one of my favorites. The video was animated by Chris Koelsch with music by Heath McNease.

Legend of Zelda: Pot Smasher

Anyone who has played the classic Legend of Zelda series is used to smashing a lot of pots to find various items including Rupee’s. What we did not know is that Link seems to have an obsession with it. In this awesome video made by the cool dudes who make sweet vids, Freddiew, Link, played by Lindsey Sterling, shows us just how much Link likes to smashy, smashy.

Memories of Multiplayer

This week on the Obsolete Gamer Show we had a chance to interview Ryan Culver who played Nathan Drake for the PlayStation commercial for PlayStation’s All-Star Battle Royale. The guys not only nails the look for Nathan Drake, but is actually a man of action and adventure himself flying people all over the world. In our panel discussion we talk about our memories of playing multiplayer games be it with a bunch of friend in our homes or thousands of players online and all the good and bad the comes with playing with others.

Robot Chicken: Pac-Man

Today’s video of the day comes from the Adult Swim show, Robot Chicken. You can always expect Seth Green and the gang to come up with some hilarious shorts, but his retro gaming parody’s are especially funny. Check out their latest one based on the classic arcade hit, Pac-Man.

Street Fighter X Mega Man Crossover

Since DC faced Marvel comics I have been a fan of epic crossovers and to celebrate 25 years of Street Fighter and Mega Man, (has it been that long?), Capcom is releasing an awesome 8-bit crossover for free on December 17. Just in time for the Holidays you will be able to challenge some of the top Street Fighter characters including Blanka, Ryu, Chun Li,and, Dhalsim with the blue bomber himself.

The Death of G4

Now G4 television will be replaced with Esquire television named after the magazine. Along with the name change the channel will see a change in focus from games and technology for gamers to; an “untapped metrosexual viewership,” that will be “more in line with the modern male.” The casualties are already coming in with the announcement of the cancellation of shows like X-Play and Attack of the Show.
