Game Gallery: Arkanoid

As with many games of its time, Arkanoid was born in the arcades, but the version I spent by far the most time playing is this fine conversion for the Speccy. It doesn’t look quite as nice, as you might expect, but it’s got it where it counts. All stages and features from its arcade parent have been squeezed into the 48k of memory and mercifully it’s even a little easier, awarding the player with four lives from the start rather than two. Having said that, I still doubt that I could’ve finished this game without the aid of the ‘PBRAIN’ cheat. So, thanks to that splendid bit of foresight by the programmers, I can present all 33 rounds of Arkanoid!

The Obsolete Gamer Show: Back to Business

This week we had our flame-war starting writer, Umar back in the studio and the talk focused on most of the staff playing League of Legends. We also talk about failing or failed MMO’s and pricing of games and MMO and the differences between a rabid gamer and a rabid sports fan. All in all a good show, let you know what you think.

Not digital Italian plumbers, or peculiar Far Eastern brand names. Apparently times have changed. A simple, but admittedly quite inspired, YouTube video can prove it:

Windows 386: The Spy that Blue-screened on Me

In 1988, Microsoft sent out a video tape to retailers that was to explain the benefits of Windows 386 so that they could purchase them to sell to their customers. The original video is over 12 minutes long, but this video has been shorted to where it gets “good”.

MS DOS 5 Upgrade Song

I really want this video to speak for itself, but in a nutshell this is an promotional video that was sent to retailers to get them to purchase the MS Dos 5 upgrade to sell to their customers. This was done using a rap video, a horrible, horrible, rap video.

What happens when you have a bunch of gamers talk about girls, well you have this week’s Obsolete Gamer Show. Ignacio, Tom and J.A dive into the lovely subject of getting, retaining and dealing with girls as a gamer. I am sure once again, we offended a ton of people, especially Tom, but it is a good look into the mind of some games and their views on relationships.

Council of Gaming Legends

An idea started in 2008 to bring together some of the legendary gamers to work for a common cause. Nicknamed the League of Legendary Gamers on Kotaku for a charity event at E4All 2008, a group of gamers united to collect food for the homeless. This group of “Legendary Gamers,” composed of Walter Day, Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendell, TriForce Johnson, Billy Mitchell, Todd Rogers and Justin Wong, wanted to do more.

Desktop Dungeons

So, let’s talk a bit about Desktop Dungeons then, shall we? Well, at first glance it looks like a simplified rogue-like that can be won or lost in less than ten minutes. It sports some simple yet effective sounds, oldschool graphics (complete with a variety of different tilesets), and some extremely elegant game mechanics. Click to move, click on an enemy to attack, click on a spell to cast it or a potion to consume.

Everyone has off days and pretty much every day the staff at Obsolete Gamer is a little off. This time for the show, we wanted to focus on horrible things you have done during gaming. Examples of horrible things you would do during gaming world be like pooping in a sock or forgoing a shower for days on end.

The Space Quest Retrospective: A janitor’s epic tale

Meet Roger Wilco, janitor extraordinaire and star of the (mostly) hilarious Space Quest series by Sierra, back from the era when adventure games were actually considered killer-apps and went on to spawn sequel after sequel. Say hi, through almost seven Space Quest games (well, six actually), out of which only five (almost six) used roman numerals in their titles. Meet him here and have a drink in adventure-o-vision, while reading through this particularly short retrospective.

Ads From The Past: Retro Rewind

Making crappy games interesting was a huge part of video gaming back in the late 80s and 90s and this is just one of the bunch. I’m not saying the game is horrible but it’s not something I would play on a daily basis or in a session of retro gaming goodness. The ad itself portrays it as a game that anyone can pick up and play although if you were smart enough to not buy into the ad, you’ll be good. For the rest of you, run for your lives!

Project Zomboid

It will be played in via a download or within the web browser which means it can be played it on on PC, Mac or Linux. The game is being described as isometric action zombie survival RPG. At first glance it looks like PC and Amiga classic UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM) crossed with classic PC murder simluator Postal, but developers Indie Stone are promising some very interesting features.

Gag Films versus Series

I was lucky enough to see Video Games live at the Broward Center yesterday and it was an amazing experience. If you love video games and video game music, you must go see one of their shows. During the show they shows small clips of videos games being mixed with each other, the videos were from GaG Films.com and were awesome. Here are some of my favorites.

Thriftstore and Flea Market Finds

Well today I went to the thriftstore to see if I could find some Famicom carts but came out empty again well not really. I was able to find some other kewl stuff including a CDX console. At first I though it was a 32X adaptor for the Genesis but when the lady showed it to me it said CDX which I had no idea what it was until I saw the sega logo on the AC adaptor so I took it. When I got home I found out that it was actually a Genesis console with the Sega CD addon which is great because I wanted a Sega CD for a long time and finally got one.
