I’m a puzzle freak and tend to like any game that belongs to this genre. It’s skill based and also involves an element of strategy in it. The art is incredible and the game has kept me hooked on for hours! We recently released a new title for the iPhone and iPad – The Jim and Frank Mysteries-The Blood River Files. I love the pure simplicity of Galaga. It takes you right back to roots of gaming with its ruthless nature. Your goal: Make it on the highscore table by any means necessary and all you need to worry about is moving left and right and pressing the fire button. I’m far from being considered a ‘master’ of it, but it never fails at reeling me in for a good round or two every now and then. I actually have the arcade machine sitting a few feet away.

If I had to pick just one game, however, it would have to be the original Legend of Zelda. By the standards of the day the game world was huge, which made it lots of fun. But what I really loved were all the secrets. Every nook and cranny held yet another hidden item. I’m still a sucker for a good treasure hunt.

First and foremost the haunting music was just perfect for that game. But one of things I like most about it is that they took my memory of the first Metroid and made the game feel even more technical. The way you get to select weapons and the suit layout. The game was perfect.

It has magic, pirates and an abominable snowman! The feeling of tension when trying to collect the ingredients and cast the spell before Manannan came back to the house was palpable. The reward of finally giving him the “special” porridge and gaining your freedom still stands out in my mind as one of my favorite moments ever in a game!

Growing up in a tiny village in the countryside meant very little access to exciting technology. When my brother and I were given our cousin’s old Commodore in the late ‘80s, we were hooked straight away. Spy Hunter was always my favourite (despite being rubbish at it) because of the addictive gameplay and awesome theme tune.

To me, this was a huge milestone in gaming. It had a great story, and fantastic combat with really interesting designs where everything had a clear use, and felt great to use. As a designer, never give power in a game without giving fun.

As a former traditional 2D animator I think that Earthworm Jim has some of the best character animation I’ve ever seen in a video game. The visual design is unique and the game play is responsive giving the player a tactile experience. Unlike most game franchises where the sequels usually get better as time goes on, this IP never really made any thriving sequels. The first game is still the most popular and still gets ported to new platforms. EWJ is a solid side-scroller even by today’s standards.

On the back wall were several classic arcade cabinets including Defender, Joust and Robotron. The systems were all from Retrocade and Alex explained that originally he wanted to keep the classic original cabinets, but it is truly a lot of work dangerous even to care and maintain due to the circuit boards and electronics used in those older systems.

Zelda II had a dark and enigmatic spirit that captured my attention as a child and continues to inspire me to this day. I love the warbling, disconcerting soundtrack that sets the stage for falling into graves, fighting severed heads, and even confronting your own shadow.
