Video Game Cakes

Video Game Cakes

When you are a kid, most of the time when your birthday rolls around you are thinking about the gifts first and maybe the party second. While some people view a card with the right words as a thoughtful gift for us gamers, the best gift might just be the right cake to go along with whatever game or system you happened to buy us. Here are some lucky people who got some awesome video game related cakes for their birthday. By the way, my birthday is February 19th, just saying.

Retro Gear: Metal Gear NES

Today we highlight a pretty cool mod job done on a classic NES console. This NES was moded with custom Metal Gear colors with matching game cart and controllers. The controllers are backlit and the windowed area also lights up red. Check out the video by create jaytod2 on Youtube.

Funco Land

Ads of the Past: Funco Land

Oh Funco Land you evil child pawnshop. You took advantage of me by surrounding me with games I could not afford and made my adolescent brain made deals like trading Megaman 2, which my mother paid over $40 for, and selling it for less than $10.

Akkanvader - Taito - 1985 - Space Invader Clone

Akkanvader

Akkanvader is a Space Invaders clone made by Taito and released in 1995. It is kind of the Japanese lollypop version of the game being all colorful, cute and all, but it is also fun. So you can select from a wide range of characters and each has a different style and ship that you used in the game. However, it doesn’t matter story wise which you select as they all act the same way.

Fake Video Game Boxes: Vol 1

It’s been done a ton of times on message boards and seeing many cool and funny one’s myself I wanted to showcase some fake video game boxes on OG.

Puzzle Bobble - Bust A Move - Title Screen

Game Gallery: Puzzle Bobble

One of my reasons for doing this is because, when I first started writing game reviews I found it really difficult to find decent quality screenshots, and half the ones I did find were tagged, which infuriates me. So, I started grabbing my own screenshots and, unlike so many other selfish tossers on the net, anyone is welcome to take my screenshots and use them for whatever they like. It would be nice if I could get a namecheck or something in return, but if not, no problem!

Arkanoid - Game Screenshots

Game Gallery: Arkanoid

As with many games of its time, Arkanoid was born in the arcades, but the version I spent by far the most time playing is this fine conversion for the Speccy. It doesn’t look quite as nice, as you might expect, but it’s got it where it counts. All stages and features from its arcade parent have been squeezed into the 48k of memory and mercifully it’s even a little easier, awarding the player with four lives from the start rather than two. Having said that, I still doubt that I could’ve finished this game without the aid of the ‘PBRAIN’ cheat. So, thanks to that splendid bit of foresight by the programmers, I can present all 33 rounds of Arkanoid!

Among them was splendid Retro Gamer forum user, Tepid Snake, who helped me get past Round 98, on which I’d been stuck for a few days. It was then that I discovered that those crafty scoundrel’s at Taito don’t give you the proper ending unless you finish the game with two players. So back I went to complete the game again, after adding a few credits for a non-existent second player, so I could detail the ‘proper’ ending here. Then I find out that I’ve still not earned the full ending! To do that I have to decipher the mysterious code that I received on earning the ‘Happy Ending’, but I think I’ll leave that for another time! Taito sure know how to get the most out of a game, huh? As I mentioned in my review, this is a game full of intricacies and secrets!

King Kong 2 - Ikari no Megaton Punch - Title Screen

POD: King Kong’s Queen Kong

As I was playing this game I decided to take a break and check out the demo gameplay that is shown. I was also introduced to what the story is behind this game. King Kong 2 is probably one of the more fun smashing games for the Famicom. The story should make you want to smash even more especially when Queen Kong is taken away! Oh NO!! Behold some snapshots of the intro:

Pac Man Room

POD: Pac-Man Fever

Ever walk into someone’s room and they decorate it in one theme and it freaks you out because there is so much of it? In this case, these kids have some serious Pac-Man fever, or their parents do.

Super Mario Bros planning sheet

POD: Super Mario Bros: Origins

Did you know that when Super Mario Bros was being created it was not done on a computer or any type of high tech device? For the original team behind Super Mario Bros planning sheets where used to detail everything from level design to control. Nintendo recently published an article talking with many of the creative forced behind SMB and revealed some interesting insight into the development process.

Crystal Defenders Logo

POD: Crystal Defenders

In a nutshell, monsters will come in through one area and make their way down a set path. You job is to place characters along the side of the path to kill the monsters before they reach your crystal. You can place characters that do damage or slow the monsters among other things and you can pause the game in order to plan your defense.

Rage Logo

Picture of the Day: Rage

Rage is an FPS set in a not too distant future of earth shortly after an asteroid had impacted earth. You emerge from the rubble to find humanity fighting to survive and rebuild as they deal with gangs, mutants and more, kind of sounds like Fallout meets Deep Impact.

Rat Burger Parasite Eve demotivational poster

Motivational Monday: Game Food

Tis a cold night it was in the belly of the dark ones castle. Deep within was the chilling winds of evil and the stench of death surrounding my very being. Why or why did I wear my dress on this adventure? Thank goodness the count did not know of my paralyzing fear of the dark or he might not have setup all these lovely candles for me, vanilla scented if I smell correctly. As the night went on despair came over me. I thought of giving up and then I saw it, under the steps next to some dead rats. The Lord of Death did care, he remembered my birthday!

Parasite Eve box

POD: Parasite Eve

Today we bring you pictures, screenshots, wallpapers and artwork from one of my favorite games, Parasite Eve. It was developed and published in 1998 by Square Enix and follows the story of Aya Brea a New York cop that witnesses an entire opera house spontaneously combust. It is up to her to find out not only why it happened, but why she wasn’t affected.
