Today’s video comes from one of the first Capcom versus games featuring Marvel characters. I remember first seeing this game at a local arcade and spending all my movie money on it and it was totally worth it. Now, compared to the later games X-Men seems slow and simple, but at the time it was the best comic fighter out there.

This week we sought out a specific stat in our cosplay beauties, can you guess what it is?

Akkanvader is a Space Invaders clone made by Taito and released in 1995. It is kind of the Japanese lollypop version of the game being all colorful, cute and all, but it is also fun. So you can select from a wide range of characters and each has a different style and ship that you used in the game. However, it doesn’t matter story wise which you select as they all act the same way.

You have five main worlds as well as sub-stages, all very animated with tons of colors of the enemies and the background. A result of this is the game becomes more difficult because you end up having trouble figuring what’s going on.

The game starts out retro style with little colors and looks a lot like the original invaders, but from there more color comes into play and soon you are fighting all types of strange characters never seen in the original game.

Now some other changes with this game is the ability to charge your laser king of like you would in R-type or Megaman. This really is only useful for bosses which is something else that Akkanvader brings to the table.

Expect to see all kinds of weird enemies and even weirder boss as seen in our screenshot gallery below. I guess this is just to make sure you remember it’s a Japanese game.

Today’s gameplay footage comes from the SNK fighter, Aggressors of Dark Kombat. Apparently the English title is meant to parody Mortal Kombat which is weird since it is nothing like the game. The game was released in 1994 and is a pretty standard SNK fighter except for the fact that you could walk into the background. Also, you could use weapons and only use two buttons to fight.

Another change in this game is the health bar which reminds me of the health bar for bosses in Final Fight where it turns from Green to Yellow and then Red before you get knocked out. To this end there is only one round so if you lose it that’s game.

Personally I took note of two characters; one is Kisarah Westfield which is an English tomboy school girl who has a crush on Joe Kusanagi and Bobby Nelson, an African-American kid that uses his basketball to fight. These games were truly the U.N. of its time.

Oh the puns keep flying! So the staff is still taken over by Old Republic and with the announcement of more content it seems little work will get done. The good news is the Fapp department works all night long! This time we bring you Cosplay from the Star Wars universe and not just a bunch of Princess Leias either.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 01 – Saints Row The Third

The theme song is one of the best songs in the game. It has hip hop beats which go great with the theme of gang warfare that the game is all about.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 02 – When Good Heists Go Bad

Nice tense song. Sounds like it would be perfect for a stealth combat mission.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 03 – The Mission Part 1

This sounds like a perfect song for a robbery or probably from something out of Shadowrun.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 04 – The Mission Part 2

The continuation of The Mission. Such tense music is a perfect blend of rock and techno.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 05 – Oleg And Kinzie

This one is still tense but not as action packed as the other ones. Nice change in pace.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 06 – Killbane And The Syndicate

Now this is more like it. This one is a strong rock track with militant elements to it.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 07 – STAG

This one makes me think of 2001: A Space Odyssey mixed with Terminator and mixed with TRON Legacy. This is the theme for STAG, the super badguys from the game.

Saints Row: The Third [Soundtrack] – 08 – End Game

This nice mellow yet strong hip hop track wraps it all up.

So let me start off by telling you the name alone is enough reason to at least see what it is about. In a nutshell it is a scrolling shoot em up game published by Data East in 1989. The game has a cyborg that has to fight off tons of aliens and collecting power ups in order to become stronger and survive.

Point blank, I suck at this game. Seriously, look at the video, that’s me. I am good at games or I was, but I could not get off of level one. Maybe I should not do videos on these types of games because it shows how far I have fallen.

One thing is for sure, like in R-Type the key is being as powered-up as possible at all times or you will be owned. See, that boss at the end of the video. I am sure I would have owned him with full power-ups, but as that little bug I got squashed. This is a sad state of affairs.

Today’s classic gaming video comes from C.P. Brain developer of this Final Fight style game called, 64th Street: A Detective Story. The game was released to arcades in 1991 by Jaleco and features a story about two detectives who are asked to find the kidnapped daughter of a rich guy. The two do their detective work by beating up a ton of bad guys using anything that falls out of crates and the background.

The game is pretty much just a beat em up, but I do like that you can toss the bad guys into the background. As usual with these games tossing the bad guy or using weapons is the key and you really only get hurt if surrounded or some special attack a boss might have.

Overall nothing to write home about, but it is a good time waster.

Today’s classic gaming video is from the Corland made game 4D Warriors. Here is a description from Arcade central.

The game is a horizontal scrolling shooter in which you take
control of a jetpack propelled space warrior who travels between parallel
universes and worm holes (hence 4-D or 4 dimensions) throughout the game.

By flying over the top of the play field, you end up in an alternate universe.
You travel back and forth defeating enemies until you reach a boss creature.

On some occasions a worm hole will appear in the middle of the play field
and you are taken to even stranger worlds…

The game contains at least six distinct worlds. You begin in a red
zone populated by a variety of surreal enemies. The red zone also
contains at least three kinds of powerups in the form of crystals.

By going over the top of the red zone, you can enter a blue zone.

The blue zone is where the level boss first appears. Once the boss is
sufficiently damaged, it will retreat to

the red zone, where you can destroy it and advance to the next
level. When the boss is not present, the level contains a
selection of enemies that behave similarly to those in the red
zone, although their appearance is somewhat different.

Today’s classic gaming video comes from Youtube to showcase a player trying to get the lowest score in Super Mario Bros. Here are his words from the video.

Success! Here I achieve the (almost) lowest score possible in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. No save states or slowdown was used, but I did increase the frame skip by quite a bit when waiting at the flag poles. Since you probably don’t want to watch that, I cut out almost 8 minutes of video where I’m just running out the clock.

I pull off a couple interesting tricks and glitches to make this work. In 4-2, I backwards jump into a few obstacles to scroll the screen without Mario to trick the pipe into taking me to the vine’s usual location. In 8-1, I have to perform a pretty precise jump off a goomba to avoid some coins. Also, getting under the first set of 2 coins towards the end of this level takes a very careful jump, and always makes me nervous. In 8-4, I scroll the screen to just the right position to allow me to use some blocks as platforms. No wall jumps are required in this run at all.

I show off a bit at the start, but after 8-1 I start to take my time. 8-3 is really a tough level. I took a chance to run and jump past a couple hammer bros. towards the end, but the final 2 I took slow. These are close together, so getting by them the careful way proves to be quite challenging. As you can see, there were a lot of hammers to dodge there.

And to think, I used to think I was so cool doing the 1up trick until I died and had to start over.

Coming next year is the follow-up to the downloadable Sega game, Sonic 4. This all new version will feature brand new graphics and a new physics engine as well. The idea behind the new physics engine is to get you back to the feeling of playing Sonic on your Genesis console.
